Sažetak

This essay discusses Richard Prices approach to the questions of moral philosophy. I contrast Hume’s theory of mind and Price’s reply that understanding can originate simple ideas. The essay then presents Price’s claim that moral properties are intrinsic properties of action, and his views of moral obligation and motivation. I demonstrate that his theory is superior to those of earlier rationalists Samuel Clarke and William Wollaston. After presenting three objections to Price’s version of rationalism, those of flaws in his arguments to establish that moral properties are primary, of arbitrariness, and of anthropocentrism, I conclude that Price still cannot be denied his contribution to the development of modern moral theory.
