Infectious diseases in Croatia in 2006

Sažetak
The Epidemiology Service of the Croatian National Institute of Public Health is presenting here a review of actual epidemiological situation in Croatia in 2006 based on data from national case notification and outbreak notification network system. The situation can be assessed as rather favorable based on the following main parameters: diseases of poverty, pore sanitation and education (typhoid fever, shigellosis, and hepatitis A) became rare and sporadic, diseases included in national mass immunization program are completely depressed (measles, rubella, mumps, whooping cough, tetanus) and even eliminated or eradicated (diphtheria, poliomyelitis). Classical sexually transmitted diseases, gonorrhoea, syphilis are under control, showing low incidence. AIDS incidence remains low and stationary twenty years since the first registered cases. There were no outbreaks connected with industrially produced food products. Public water supply is fairly safe: no outbreaks in 2006. However, the situation should be also assessed as unstable, having in mind that certain potentially risky factors still exist, like locally insufficient sanitation, especially regarding waste disposal, further, there are war damages still present on some sanitary and communal infrastructure, and also significant war and post war migrations. Thus, a continuous systematic work and implementation of all prevention and control measures is needed. Data presented suggest that measures are effective, making Croatia fully comparable to developed countries (tuberculosis still rather frequent, shows a favorable downward incidence trend too) in some elements ranking even among the best (vaccination program, zoonoses control etc). All efforts in further improvement of health are however justified.
