Sažetak
Japanese flower thrips (Thrips setosus Moulton, 1928) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) was found in Croatia in May 2016 on potted hydrangea plants (Hydrangea spp.) originating from domestic production. It was found in the open, in a nursery in Turanj (N 43°58'18.5“ E 15°25'1.5“). This is the first record of this invasive species in Croatia. Pest was detected during regular phytosanitary visual inspections of plants, when unusual damage on Hydrangea leaves was noticed. Low infestation of dark adults and light coloured larvae, as well as typical thrips damage (silvery spots with dark excrements on the underside of the leaf), were observed on infested plants. Several adult thrips were sampled for laboratory analysis. Thrips females were identified based on morphological characteristics as species T. setosus, according to the relevant keys. The origin of the finding is unknown, but it could be linked to import of hydrangea plants from the Netherlands, where T. setosus was first recorded in 2014. It originally comes from Asia. Due to its highly polyphagous nature and the ability to transmit Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV), T. setosus presents a potential risk to vegetable crops in Croatia, especially glasshouse production of tomato, pepper and cucumber.
