Sažetak

The first archives data on the health care in Osijek date back to the late 17th century and the data on the beginnings of dentistry are more numerous and related to the activities of "barber-surgeons" in the 18th century. At that time there were separate lists of "examined", qualified surgeons and country barbers. As soon as 1762, the Magistrate of Osijek passed a principle decision on the limitations for "barbers" medicinal practice", so that barbers were only allowed to treat wounds and broken bones, pull out teeth and let blood, whereas they were forbidden to treat internal diseases and write prescriptions. In the early 19th century, travelling "dental doctors" occasionally came to Osijek and announced their services in the newspapers. At that time our first dissertation "DE GLOSSITIDE" was written. The first popularly written handobook on oral care and treatment - a real rarity for the time - was published in Osijek in 1890. The author was Geza Bauer, who, not being a physician, called himself a "Zahnartist". That was the period when the dental "praxis aurea"
attracted the first dental physicians, who are regarded by the authors as the forerunners of the modem stomatology in Osijek.
