Sažetak

Croatian war has all the features of modem wars: high incidence of civilian victims, extensive use of artillery with multiple wounding and loss of the classical front line. Autopsy records analysis was conducted at the Department of Pathology and Forensic Medicine, Osijek Clinical Hospital, from May 1, 1991 till April 30, 1992. In that period, 751 autopsies of the victims of the violent death were performed. 414 (55.1%) of these deaths were related to explosive wounds, and 274 (36.5%) were inflicted by firearms. Most of the victims were male (673 - 89.6%). Younger age groups were more exposed to the wounding the majority of victims were in the third or in the fourth decade of their lives (399 - 53.1%). The number of casualties among soldiers and civilians was almost the same. The casualties in urban areas outnumbered the ones on the battlefield. The most severe casualties in this area were recorded in September (128 - 17.4%) and November (150 - 19.9%) 1991. Most of the deadly wounded were homicide victims (94%), whereas suicides (2.9%) and accidents (3.1%) were rare. According to explosive wound sites, most wounds were multiple, covering the whole body (50%). The multiple gunshot wounds were mostly distributed on the trunk and extremities (26.3 %), whereas the head was the most frequent site of the solitary ones (48%). The destruction of civilian targets and the large number of explosive wounds and multiple gunshot wounds among casualties seem to be an increasing characteristic of a modem war.
