Abstract
Current methods of prostatectomy for BPH are discussed; our own experiences are compared to the results from literature with respect to mortality, duration of hospitalization, frequency of postoperative bleeding, surgical reinterventions and postoperative stenotic disease. Transurethral, transvesical and retropubic prostatectomy are elaborated as well as endoscopic laser application, transurethral stent and alpha blocker teraphy. In conclusion, the preference i s given to TUR therapy with contemporary use in 90% of cases. Open operations are restricted to the cases of big prostatic volume. The applications of stent i s reserved for high-risk cases with limited success. Alpha blockers represent a teraphy for prostatism without prostatic urinary retention. All other methods are either still in experimental phase or already given up.
