The results of a survey of quarantine thrips species from genus Cirtothrips Shull, 1909 on citrus in Croatia

Sažetak
Scirtothrips aurantii Faure, 1929, Scirtothrips citri (Moulton, 1909) and Scirtothrips dorsalis Hood, 1919 are quarantine polyphagous thrips species. Adults and thrips larvae feed on young leaves and fruits of citrus, but not on mature leaves and fruits. Symptoms of feeding range from silvering of the leaf surface, thickening of the leaf edge and curling of the leaves to brown frass markings on the leaves and fruits and grey to black markings on fruits, often forming a ring around the apex. The consequences of heavy infestation are fruit deformation and premature defoliation. A survey of quarantine thrips species was conducted in 2015 and 2016 in 36 citrus plantations in Zadar, Šibenik-Knin, Split-Dalmatia and Dubrovnik-Neretva counties. Visual inspections and thrips sampling were conducted during flowering and at the beginning of fruit development (BBCH 55-72) in April, May and June. Thrips were collected by beating of citrus branches on a white plastic tray. Also, citrus flowers and young fruits were collected during visual inspections on each site for subsequent laboratory analysis. Modified Berlese funnels method was used for extraction of thrips from samples of plant material in laboratory conditions. Altogether 72 visual inspections were carried out and 208 samples of thrips were collected for species identification. Thrips from collected samples were identified to the species level on the basis of morphological characters of adult females, using the classical identification method according to relevant morphological keys. Quarantine species S. aurantii, S. citri and S. dorsalis were not determined in any of the analysed samples. The most common and abundant thrips species were Thrips major Uzel, 1895, Thrips tabaci Lindeman, 1889 and Thrips meridionalis Priesner, 1926. Species Dendrothrips phyllireae (Bagnall, 1927) and Thrips mediterraneus Priesner, 1934, as well as Pezothrips kellyanus (Bagnall, 1916) as an important citrus pest in the Mediterranean region, were recorded for the first time in Croatia.
