Sažetak

The investigation included 191 nephrolithiasis patients and 109 healthy controls, who were born in the region of Split, or have been living there for more than ten years. The patients were divided into five groups, according to the findings of the infrared spectrometric analysis of their renal mass. The findings of the stone composition were compared to their blood and 24-hour urine calcium levels. Hypercalciuria was found in 24.6 % of the patients and 8.3 % of the controls. High hypercalciuria rates in the patients with urate stones and stones composed of uric acid and other compounds (54 %) suggest uric acid as a possible initiator of nucleation in the formation of those types of renal stones, very frequent in the examined region. The prosence of hypercalciuria in controls suggests thet a probable reason they do not form stones may be the action and the quality of crystalization and aggregation inhibitors. The authors give some suggestions for future research.
