Sažetak

Thirty patients, aged 60 years or more, who suffered from residual urine higher than 100 ml due to benign prostatic enlargement were studied urodynamically. According to the results of urodynamic studies it was possible to divide patients into two main groups. The filling cystometry was performed in supine position, the bladder was filled with saline (at 37 °C) at the rate of 90 ml/min and rectal pressure measured at the same time. The methods of measuring, their definitions, and the units in which they were expressed conform to standardized terminology proposed by the International Continence Society (ICS). Filling cystometry defined two groups, one with high and one with low pressure filling. Patients who had high pressure filling prior to operation showed a more satisfactory response to surgery. The cystometrograms in all these patients showed low pressure filling after prostatectomy. This study serves to define the types of chronic retention found in patients with benign prostatic enlargement and to show that urodynamic investigations can predict which patients are likely to benefit from prostatectomy.
