Sažetak
This paper outlines the influence of science and scientists on human culture, society and medicine. The power of scientific objectivity has promoted science into the major driving force of civilisation. Besides its cognitive penetration into basic structure and function of matter and biophenomena, science has been exploited as a base for a broad scale of applications, such as industrial processes and technologies. This transfer of science into technology in considered as the unique achievement of the man. Those industrial processes produce a myriad of useful products, which have shaped man’s special niche in the Universe. Universities are academic centers for promotion of science, education and other phenomena of culture. They represent a data base of human knowledge, which is the point of reference to any cultural activity. Contemporary electronic communication systems have accelerated a rapid exchange of information, which has boosted scientific development and application. Advances in medicine depend on the development of biomedical sciences. Recent achievements in molecular biology have induced radical changes in some aspects of medicine. The author emphasizes new demands in the education of physicians. Major scientific achievements in biology and influence on medical practice have been summarised briefly.
