Abstract
Dynamics of the serum transaminases (ALT and AST) and bilirubin levels in a group of 50 patients with immunologically verified acute viral A hepatitis and previous infection by hepatitis B virus (HBV) have been analysed by methods of regression. The control group of age and sex matched pairs consisted of patients with acute A hepatitis without previous HBV infection. An additional control group consisted of 77 patients with uncomplicated acute B hepatitis. Linear and cubic correlations between AST, ALT and bilirubin and the duration of illness, calculated on the basis of several hundred measurements, were significant in each group at the level p < 0.01. Calculated curves of regression have shown a delayed normalisation of the observed parametres among patients with the acute A hepatitis and previous HBV infection, when compared to those with A hepatitis without previous HBV infection. Acute B hepatitis patients had much higher initial values and much slower normalisation than both hepatitis A groups. These dynamics have resulted in significantly longer hospital stay for A hepatitis patients with previous HBV infection, when compared to those without previous HBV infection (p < 0.01), but shorter than for acute B hepatitis patients. It can be concluded that each of the three observed groups of patients with the acute viral hepatitis has displayed a different pattern of the biochemical parametres’ dynamic. This suggests that a previous HBV infection can even without the development of a chronic liver disease make liver less resistant to the infection by hepatitis A virus.
