Abstract

Results of a retrospective study of 33 cases of non-A non-B (NANB) hepatitis hospitalized in the Department of Infectious Diseases, Medical Centre Slavonski Brod from 1980 till 1985 are presented. During the four-years period, only 3.64'% of the cases were due to NANB hepatitis, out of 906 hospitalized patients with acute viral hepatitis. The diagnosis of NANB hepatitis was established by exclusion of hepatitis A, hepatitis B, cytomegalovirus infections and Epstein-Barr virus infections and toxic and drug induced liver damage as well. Nearly all of the treated cases appeared sporadically. In our study the most important pattern of the transmission of NANB hepatitis resulted from the close contact with a case of hepatitis (70%). Posttransfusion NANB hepatitis occured in 6% of the cases. The clinical features of acute NANB hepatitis were undistinguishable from those of the other viral hepatitis infections. Spontaneous resolution of acute illness occured in four weeks since the onset of the disease. No patient had clinically recognized chronic course of NANB infection.
