CABARET – 0RIGIN, HISTORY, CONVENTIONS AND THEORY

Sažetak

Although cabaret has officially been a genre for over a hundred years, the problem with various theatrical editions around the world, and especially in Croatia, is a chronic lack of theoretical and historical involvement with the genre. The disadvantage is evidently conditioned by the marginalization of the genre as a marginal theatrical phenomenon in the theatrical world, and by the fact that it differs from other genres through very specific form, content and place of performance. Since cabaret as a genre is characterized by multimedia and interdisciplinarity, traditional literature and/or theatre studies do not feel obligated to research it and transfer the responsibility between each other, which results in sporadic researches and scientific articles dealing with the genre. This article will therefore try to offer a brief historical overview of the genre of cabaret from its beginnings in France to Germany, Poland, USA, Russia and Croatia... The examples of cabaret functions in the war will further emphasize the importance of the genre as a very specific phenomenon that spontaneously manifests in artistic-cultural and intellectual circles in special crisis situations. Additional chapter of the article will be devoted to the theoretical conventions of the three most important contemporary theorists who tried to approach the genre scientifically: Jürgen Henningsen, Michael Flesicher and Benedikt Vogel. By presenting their theories, fundamental definitions, phenomenology of conditions, methods, and the basics of genre characteristics, cabaret will be presented from contemporary, scientific point of view.
