Sažetak
The paper gives an overview of flooded area mapping with images obtained by an active radar sensor installed in satellite Sentinel-1 of the European Space Agency (ESA). The radar possesses its own radiation source, thus facilitating surveys regardless of the time of day, and thanks to longer radiation wavelengths that pass through the clouds and haze undisturbed, it does not depend on weather conditions and the state of the atmosphere, which makes it very practical for flood mapping. The analysed images cover a greater area of Grobničko polje in November 2016, when floods caused by record monthly precipitation quantities were recorded in this area. In November 2016, 486.6 mm of precipitation was recorded at the station Rijeka, and even 1311 mm at the station Platak in the hinterland. When the flood occurred, attention was mostly directed at remediating the problems caused by floods, such as flooded roads and a threat to the flooding of houses. Only the subsequent identification of the flooded areas offered a comprehensive insight into all flooded locations and the actual scope of the flood. In a series of satellite images, there is a visible change in the size of the flooded area during November and at the start of December 2016. On November 15, 0.07 km2 was flooded; on November 21, the flooded area increased to 0.56 km2; on November 26, the flooded area was estimated at 0.68 km2, while on December 2, 2016, the flooded area decreased to 0.53 km2.
