Sažetak

Aim: To determine the degree of hand hygiene compliance of the health care staff of the Intensive Care Unit, Clinical Hospital Center Rijeka, and to gain insight into the practice and quality of hand hygiene.
Subjects and methods: A heterogeneous group of health workers, nurses and doctors whose common feature is the place of work. Direct observation according to the concept "Five Moments for Hand Hygiene" of the World Health Organization was carried out during three months, until reaching at least 200 occasions, one observation lasting up to twenty minutes. The observed indications, actions and wearing gloves were recorded. The percentage of compliance is the ratio of observed actions (hand wash and hand rub) and observed opportunities when it was necessary to carry out the hand hygiene. Data are recorded by codes, distributed by years of follow up from 2011 to 2016.
Results: Total compliance in the hand hygiene during six-year follow-up was 78%. Hand washing was used more frequently (68%) than the hand rub (32%). The total percentage of compliance to the indications was: before the contact with the patient 71%, before the aseptic procedure 79%, after the risk of exposure to body fluids 84%, after contact with the patient 78%, and after leaving the patient's environment 76%.
Conclusions: Hand hygiene was performed more often by hand washing than by rubbing alcoholic antiseptic. Additional efforts must be made to promote alcohol hand rub as a faster and better way of maintaining hand hygiene. Greater compliance in all indications should be encouraged in order to achieve compliance of ≥ 90%.
