Sažetak

Stroke is the third cause of mortality in the
world, while in 1998, in Croatia it was the first cause of stroke
in women. Although generally there is no difference in incidence
and prevalence of stroke between women and men, more
women from all age groups die due to the consequences of
stroke. It has been estimated that even 46% of strokes occur
during the productive age in the general population, at the age
between 45 and 59 years. The time needed for rehabilitation
after stroke depends on its severity. In developed countries a
decrease in mortality from stroke for about a half has been registered
during the 70es and 80es, while this trend is not
observed in transition countries. On the contrary, in these countries
the increase in mortality is obvious. Having in mind epidemiological
data on the incidence of stroke and current possibilities
of treatment that can encompass all patients, it is necessary
to act in preventing the occurrence of the disease. The
majority of people change the way of living only when health
problems appear; but even then it is not too late to stop the
progress of the disease and its consequences by applying preventive
measures. Thus the stress is put on prevention as the
best possible way of influencing the incidence of stroke. In the
paper presents how the Department of Neurology, University
Hospital „Sestre milosrdnice“, is for many years carrying out
the main objectives of action in the field of prevention of stroke
through many activities and educational courses. The Department
is also the Referral Center for Neurovascular Diseases of
the Republic Ministry of Health.
