Sažetak
Asplenic patients are at increased risk for serious infections, including sepsis, most commonly caused by S. pneumoniae. Disease often has a fulminant course, with mortality rates as high as 50 percent. Here we present a case of pneumococcal sepsis in a 35-year-old asplenic patient, with septic shock and multiorgan dysfunction. The patient was successfully treated with antibiotic therapy and intensive care treatment. We tried to point out the importance of immediate antimicrobial therapy in case of fever in this vulnerable population, as well as adequate prophylaxis of infection, which includes patient education, active immunisation and antimicrobial prophylaxis.
