RETROSPECTIVE ANALYSIS OF CENTRAL RETINAL VEIN AND BRANCH OCCLUSION IN THE DUBROVNIK-NERETVA COUNTY

Sažetak
The aim of this study is to present the characteristics of the population of newly discovered cases of central retinal vein and branch occlusion in Dubrovnik-Neretva County during the period from January 1, 2010 till December 31, 2014. Methods: This retrospective study analyzed data collected from documentation of the Retinal Clinic, Department of Ophthalmology, Dubrovnik General Hospital, including patient age and gender, type of retinal occlusion, visual acuity before and after therapy, and comorbidity. Results: During the study period, 47 patients were diagnosed with occlusion of central retinal vein and its branches, while one patient had bilateral vein occlusion, yielding a total of 48 patients. There were 62.5% of women. The mean age of all patients was 68.79 years, higher in women as compared with men (69.33 vs. 67.89 years), but the difference was not statistically signifi cant (p<0.05). There were 25 (53.08%) patients with central retinal vein occlusion, 18 (37.5%) patients with upper branch occlusion, and 5 (10.42%) patients with lower branch occlusion. The mean number of central vein occlusion cases was 5.0, upper branch occlusion 3.6 and lower branch occlusion 1.0 per year. Thirty-four (72.34%) patients had hypertension, and only 8 (17.02%) patients had diabetes. Conclusion: In this study, the annual incidence of central retinal vein occlusion was 4.07 of new cases and of upper and lower branch occlusion 3.74 of new cases annually in Dubrovnik-Neretva County, yielding a total incidence of 7.8 new cases per 100 000 inhabitants.
