Grape phylloxera (Viteus vitofoliae Fitch)

Sažetak
Grape phylloxera (Viteus vitofoliae Fitch) represents one of the most important pest in the history of
viticulture. It originates from North America and it was transferred to Europe in the second half of the 19 th
century. On European soil it caused decay of vineyards and seriously jeopardized the economy, especially
the production and wine market. In Herzegovina it was recorded in 1912 in the village of Vinjani, in Ljubuski
district. On the roots of European vine this pest causes hypertrophy which prevents the circulation of juices
and it leads to the drying of vines. Phylloxera phenomena caused abandonment of the traditional way
of grape growing and forced winegrowers to accept new technology in the production of vine planting
material. Grafting of Europeans grape varieties on resistant American root stock is a basic way of protecting
from the attack of this pest. Chemical control applying in root stock nurseries have a limited effect.
