Sažetak
The paper presents the Hungarian journalism in Osijek in the first three decades of the 20th century, more precisely from 1908 to the late 1920s, i.e. to 1929. The main part of the paper deals with Szlavóniai Magyar Újságom, the most significant Hungarian newspapers with the longest presence in the early 20th century, which was being published for a full decade, all the way to the fall of Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. Another attempt of publishing Hungarian newspapers in Osijek was made in the newly established Yugoslav state in 1921. These newspapers were entitled Magyar Ujság,but since the Hungarian community in Osijek has no foreign financial support, the publishing was abandoned as soon as in 1922. Then it came to a five-year break after which, in 1927, Szlavóniai Magyar Néplapstarted to be published. Despite their highly set goals, these newspapers were terminated in June of the following year. The last newspapers of Osijek published in the Hungarian language under the nameSzlavóniai Ujságwere shortly published during the year 1929.
Osijek newspapers published in Hungarian have been not only an almost unexploited source for the history of the Hungarian national component in the last decade of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and in the first decade of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes but also an interesting source for the history of Osijek and Slavonia and thus represents a particular view to various social phenomena, relevant for the entire Croatian national historiography and journalism. A special value to the newspapers was given by local news, particularly by those related to the life of the Hungarian community, which were in the principle not covered in detail in other newspapers from the viewpoint of critique. Yet, there are a number of recorded events referring to the everyday life of Osijek, which, if reported in other newspapers at all, were in Hungarian newspapers shown accompanied with additional details or from another perspective.
