Sažetak
Diarrhoea is the most consistent clinical sign of intestinal disease in the cat, and one of the most common complains of cat owners. Chronic diarrhoea is characterized by persistent or relapsing diarrhoea of 2-3 weeks duration or longer. Acute diarrhoea is usually a self-limiting disease and typically does not require a comprehensive workup of the animal. Chronic diarrhoea demands an extensive workup to obtain a diagnosis and the optimal therapy plan. History and the physical examination are important for determining whether diarrhoea is due to a primary disease of the gastrointestinal tract or secondary to extraintestinal diseases, such as hyperthyroidism, pancreatitis, exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, pancreatic neoplasia, etc. Minimal data required include: complete blood count, chemistry panel, urinalysis, thyroxin level determination (in cats older than 5 years), faecal flotation and Giardia ELISA or IFA test. Additional tests include: serum cobalamin and folate (assessment of absorption in the ileum and jejunum), trypsin-like immunoreactivity (fTLI) (diagnosis of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency), specific feline pancreatic lipase (pancreatitis), abdominal ultrasound, abdominal radiographs, FeLV/FIV serology, and endoscopy (biopsy) or laparotomy (full-thickness biopsy). Therapy can usually include (depending on the diagnosis): antiparasitic medication, dietary modification usually with a hydrolysed diet, antibacterials and immunosuppressive therapy. The trial treatment approach is labour intensive, however, this is the best way of achieving successful resolution of clinical signs.
