Sažetak

Foreign trade of any country, it case iz is unbalanced, causes unpredictable social and political problems.
The situation of Croatia, in time it was part of former Yugoslavia, as in other its parts, was characterised by continuous negative balance of national commercial and payment balance of this state.
The negative balance of payments with foreeign countries was the main reason of the lack of current capital, causing the operative performances difficult, since the sources of required ready cash was lacking. It was esspecially the case, as well as in other industries’ branches, in the economy of forest industries group.
The disintegration of former state and establishment of Croatia as independent and sovereign state hasn’t changed, regarding difficulties, except that structure of circulation of the capital has been completely changed.
The present paper shows the development of exports and imports, and based on earlier research performed by the author and larger number of recognized economists, presents cautiously towards the future as well as the respective situation of Croatia if it joins the European Union (EU). Taking into account the national resources, it seems that specialization, for which the author speaks in favour, should encompass one part of the national economic body based on absolute comparative advantages, the remaining part should be encouraged in its development, based on comparative advantages, into one rationalised and dynamical economic system.
The research up today and acquired knowledge seems to orients the future efforts towards the development of agriculture (due to favourable climate which stimulate hihg harvest of clorophile assimilation, relative scarce population dispersion, high percentage of rural-agricultural population, and large area of arable land with favourable hydrological situation), then in forestry and forest industries, for which the natural high valued forest stands, covering almost one third of land surface, are available. The third aim of economic specialization should be found in the integral tourism (transport, tourist catering, etc.) the remaining part specialized and stimulated in its development based on the principle of maximal relative economic advantage. It is expected that such an orientation coulld ensure the high standard of living for its population, regardless whether Croatia joins the EU or not. In later case the joining to the NATO becomes questionable as well, since huge amounts of money for the armament should be spared for financing of above proposed programs. Politically, the Croatian status of neutral, independent state seems the best.
