Sažetak
The aim of this investigation is to establish the possible existence of effect of social status on formation of groups. The team used in the experiment is a top-level volleyball team of 13 players, 7 of whom are standard representatives. Ages vary from 18 to 33.
The analysis of microsociological structure utilized a sociometric questionnaire which contains 6 criteria:
1. Name the players you would like to share a room with on a trips and during preparation (K 1)
2. Name the players you trust enough to speak to about your personal problems (K 2)
3. Name the players you co-operate with in the game (K 3)
4. Name the players whose knowledge of volleyball is suchthat you would at any moment ask for their advice (K 4)
5. Name the players you consider suitable to represent other players in the management of the club (K 5)
6. Name the players you consider capable of being voted of players per each criterion.
Each subject was able to choose an arbitrary number of players per each criterion.
In order to analyze social status, a short version of system DS-2 was applied. 19 variables were extracted to determine the position of the subject and his parents in the social, institutional and sanctional subsystems.
Measurements were taken in February 1985.
The obtained data were processed by means of the ESHEK program which compares the sociometric structure of a certain group of entities with objective data obtained by measuring quantitative characteristics.
Two taxonomic dimensions were extracted from the sociometric selection matrix. The highest position on the first taxon are occupied by three oldest players, related by a functional criterion. The other players, of lesser quality, occupy the second taxonomic dimension, but they are selected according to a functional but also according to an emotional criterion.
Variables of the players' social status were distributed into five dimensions. Greatest correlation was obtained between the first oblimin dimension of sociometric structure and the second oblimin dimension of the objective structure of the group, i.e. quality and status characteristics. An above-average active and an above-average passive social status influence both the quality of performance in play and homogeneity of interpersonal relationships of the functional and emotional types. Somewhat poorer, but negative correlation was found between the second oblimin dimension of sociometric structure and the second oblimin dimension of the objective structure of the group which indicates that poorer players have a less favourable social status.
It may be difficult to claim with the certainity that a favourable social climate of primary environment has a positive effect with some players on interpersonal relations and that as a result of this appears a functional congruence of performance and microsocial status. However, such seems to be the case.
