Sažetak

Field crops in the Republic of Croatia occupy the largest area, so the total value of production is the largest. Although a large number of crop pests are known, only a few regularly cause damage and must be controlled. The paper presents the entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) that act on the most important pests in crop production. The effectiveness of at least one species of EPN on majority of the most important pests in crop production has been established. The efficacy of some species has only been validated under laboratory conditions. There are seven nematoinsecticides on the market of the Republic of Croatia, but they are mainly recommended for the control of pests in the production of vegetables. Research conducted in Croatia has shown that EPN Heterorhabditis bacteriophora is effective in controlling sugar beet veewil larvae and may reduce the population for the next year, and that Steinernema carpocapsae and S. feltiae effectively suppress adults od Colorado potato beetle in the spring before they emerge from the soil. Due to the advantages of nematoinsecticides over chemical insecticides, the increasing restrictions and bans on chemical insecticides, and the growing problem of resistance, EPNs have great potential for use in the biological control of crop pests in the future.
