Sažetak

On the sample of 684 male subjects aged 19 to 27, representative of Yugoslav population of that age and sex, relations between the speed of movements and other motor abilities were analyzed.
The speed of movement was assessed through 13 composite tests; 6 of the tests were designed to assess the frequency of movements and 7 assess the speed of simple movements.
The other motor abilities were assessed through 97 composite motor tests. 4 were selected to assess each the explosive strength, the repetitive arm strength, the repetitive trunk strength, the repetitive leg strength, the static trunk strength, agility, coordination of the entire body, coordination of the arms, coordination of the legs and aiming precision. 6 tests were selected to assess the dynamometric force and the speed in complex motor tasks while 8 tests were selected to assess flexibility. 5 tests were selected to assess each the reorganization of stereo type movements, coordination in rhythm, motor educability, balance with eyes open, balance with eyes closed and the static leg strength, while 3 tests were to assess aiming precision.
The relations between speed measure of simple movements and the measures of movement frequency with the measures of other motor abilities were analyzed by means of the canonical correlation analysis.
The canonical analysis between the speed of measures of movements and measures of other motor abilities produces 4 significant canonical factors. The structure of the first pair of canonical variables suggests the hypothesis that the general factor of speed of movements, is of essential importance in realization of other motor abilities. This is particularly true of the complex motor abilities, especially those dependent upon the general factor of movement coordination. Other canonical dimensions are a consequence of relations between the speed of simple movements and the ability to modulate the basic tonus, force and speed of simple movements and regulate the distribution of force, particularly of movements whose resultant is significantly distant from the general gravity center.
Consequently, the speed of movements is a much simpler and elementary motor ability than could be supposed on the basis of the seemingly simple movement structures applied to assess this ability. In fact, the speed of movement is only a special aspect in efficiency of functioning of the entire system for regulation and control of motor exists and therefore also of the entire system responsible for regulation and control of the motor space.
