Sažetak

It is recomended that exercise should form a part of the therapy of lumbal, lumboischialgia and discopathy. The aim of exercise therapy is to attain the necessary strength of paravertebral muscles and ligaments that is required to prevent a recurrent state of intervertebral disc hernia. A further aim is to stretch the muscles of the lumbar region of the spine so as to lessen compression of nerve fibres in the lumbosacral region, and to achieve spinal traction in order to increase intervertebral spacing and thus to relieve the pressure of the discs on spinal nerve roots, eliminating the cause of pain.
Exercise therapy may be included in programmes of sports training and reaction since backache occurs frequently among sportsmen, regardless of age or type of sports activity.
The success of exercise therapy depends not just on the expert who recommendes the exercises, but also on the subject of such therapy. In order to achieve the aims of exercise therapy it is necessary to take account of the condition of the patient, his disease, starting position of the body, trunk and legs. dosage of load intensity provided by the exercises and the synergetic effects of other types of physiotherapy that might be indicated, such as hydrotherapy. thermotherapy, diathermy, peloidotherapy and mechanotherapy.
Exercise therapy can cure, relieve or prevent backache only when the patient or potential patient understands his disease and the possibilities offered by movement and exercise. Such knowledge is precondition for appropriate kinesiological behavior.
