Sažetak

Research on a sample of 287 pupils from the fi rst to fourth
grade of elementary school has shown a low frequency of answers which put PE in first place (13%), although the preference expressed for this subject is higher (37%). Spending free time in characteristically static activity is seen to be more common (27%) than free time spent doing kinesiological activity (17%). Being overweight is an increasing problem nowadays, while nervous
tension is becoming more serious. The free time of children and young people is increasingly devoted to activities which require no muscle work. Gender is an important factor in the preference shown for a subject and in relation to the significance attributed to it, while age infl uences the choice of free time activity and participation in extracurricular activities. Fewer children are engaged in extracurricular activities than in out-of-school activities. This would not be a problem if it did not indicate the inappropriateness of school to satisfy the needs of children. Physical exercise creates balance in many physiological, regulational and functional mechanisms. New studies confirm that systematic, scientifically founded exercise could positively affect not only the regulation of morphological, motoric and functional characteristics, but also cognitive functionsand connative dimensions responsible for the modalities of behaviour and the efficient socialisation of young people in terms of life and work.
