Developmental characteristics of motor and functional abilities in primary and secondary school pupils

Sažetak
For the purpose of establishing the system of norms, i.e. the criterion value of particular motor and functional abilities, 2,400 male and female primary and secondary school pupils in Croatia were tested. These pupils were divided into 12 subsamples so that each age group, from the first form of the primary school to the final/fourth form of the secondary school, comprised 200 male and female pupils. Motor abilities measurements were carried out by means of 6 variables for the assessment of speed, co-ordination, explosive power of legs, repetitive power, static strength and flexibility, whereas the functional abilities, i.e., aerobic endurance, were assessed by a running test.
The survey of development curve leads to the conclusion that there is a permanent, although unequal, trend of development in all the variables, which is significantly influenced by biotic developmental regularities. Simultaneously it can be concluded that the development both of the abilities that significantly depend on the influence of the exercising process, these abilities being, for example, repetitive power and static strength, and of the functional abilities in particular is not congruent with the desired values, which is particularly true of female students who achieve significantly lower values in these variables. The results obtained in this research therefore seriously stress that it is necessary to take actions not only in order to improve the abilities of pupils but also to improve the health status of children and the young.
