Sažetak

The assumption that sport, apart from all its affirmative values, may, especially during growth, have a harmful effect on body carriage and influence the occurrence of body anomalies, has directed our investigation towards establishing to what extent intensified specific muscle activity transforms the basic body carriage of competitive rowers over several years of morphological and functional transformation. The investigation was carried out in 1995 on a sample of 61 rowers, members of the national team of Croatia (30 juniors and 31 seniors). The results lead to the following conclusions:
1.Senior rowers are characterized by a higher percentage of indicators describing the correct body carriage, 2. higher occurrence of spinal paramorphisms is evident in junior rowers. The forms of paramorphismare such that juniors can be expected to develop a higher percentage of spinal deviations in the frontal and sagittal planes and a more frequent asymmetry of particular parts of the chest. The results of the analysis of variance show a significant difference in 2 indicators, only: kyphotic posture and pectus carrinatus, 3. The occurrence of spinal dysmorphism is rare in rowers in general and is equally present in both categories, 4. According to the type of rowing activity no systematic, regular influence of rowing on the occurrence of spinal paramorphism or dysmorphism was established, 5. It is essential to improve the trainers’ and the rowers’ knowledge of the potential antiparamorphic influence of rowing on the spine, 6. The spine of rowers at the age of development should be functionally prepared and protected from possible overloads and/or overstress.
