The recruitment and selection of candidates for the Adult Education Programme for the Profession of Police Officer

Abstract
The Police Academy is the central and only body in the Republic of Croatia in charge of conducting the education of police officers at all levels – basic education, college education, specialised training,
seminars, and courses. During all reforms and organisational changes that have taken place, the most significant changes have occurred in the area of basic police education, which is currently being implemented through the Adult Education Programme for the Profession of Police Officer. In addition to the changes concerning the education programme itself, there have also been changes in the way candidates
are recruited and selected for the mentioned education programme.
This paper aimed to review the approach and methods of the Ministry of the Interior in the process of recruitment and selection of candidates for the Adult Education Programme for the Profession of Police Officer, and analyse and compare them with generally accepted standards of recruitment and selection in the labour market as well as with the practice of international police organisations. Setting out on the case study results, the paper finds methods and procedures used by the Ministry of the Interior in the recruitment and selection process are largely in line with generally accepted standards and the practice of international police organisations. The paper also lists areas of these procedures in which a significant step forward has been made and gives recommendations for areas that need to be further strengthened.
