Sažetak
Sudden death in healthy persons engaged in physical exercise is extremely rare since a healthy heart is protected from complications. The records of eleven persons who died during or immediately after exercise in the period between 1973 and 1996 in this region have been given. Three of them were athletes one aged 21 and two aged 29 and eight were engaged in recreational physical activity and were respectively 34, 44, 62, 64 and 67 years old. Coronary heart disease was diagnosed in eight persons who were engaged in physical activity, and in two of them acute myocardial infarction was found. The athlete aged 21 had myocardial infarction, with no signs of coronary disease. One of the athletes aged 29 had signs of pathological hypertrophy of the ventricles due to congenital aorta angusta and he also had signs of chronic myocarditis while the other athlete aged 29 years engaged in rugby had signs of excessive left ventricular hypertrophy and died while swimming probably due to disturbances of heart rhythm and drowned. The reasons for the sudden deaths of these persons are discussed. In all the cases analyzed in the paper the thickness of the left ventricle wall was 15 mm or more (from 15 to 22 mm). It seems that the thickness of the wall of the left ventricle increases cardiovascular risk during exercise in persons without symptoms.
