Abstract
The author presents a brief overview of the translation of the Scriptures, the Old (and New) Testaments by Sarajevo Archbishop John (Ev) Šarić. In 1940 Šarić was commanded by the Conference of Bishops to write a translation of the Old Testament and as it seems, he himself decided to also translate the New Testament so that readers could have the entire Scriptures in Croatian.
In his preface of the first volume of the Old Testament, Šarić says that he translated from the original text but that he uses modem translations which he quotes. In two years -1941-1942 the entire Holy Bible was published, including the Old and New Testaments. The public positively accepted this project and expert criticism refers to its urgency and as such the numerous errors that could have been avoided had the work been dedicated more time. Authors of translations until then (Bartol Kašić, Matija Petar Katančić, Ivan Matija Škarić, Petar Vlašić [Psalms], Franjo Zagoda [New Testament]) took more time for their translations. This brings us to the question though, didn't Šarić infact translate using modem texts rather than the original.
Twenty years later a second edition of Šarić's Holy Scriptures was published in Madrid by Luka Brajnović.
In continuation of his article, the author gives a virtual »synopsis« in four columns, an overview of the Latin text by Vulgate, Šarić's Sarajevo translation, Šarić's Madrid translation and the »presumed appendix« Henne's German translation.
Similarities in the notes of the text, it appears, are not completely coincidental.
