Aleurodicinae – a less known subfamily of whiteflies (Sternorrhyncha: Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae)

Sažetak
Whiteflies belong to the order Hemiptera and comprise a single superfamily, Aleyrodoidea, within the suborder Sternorrhyncha. They are all placed in a single family Aleyrodidae, which includes 166 genera and 1551 species in three extant subfamilies (Aleyrodinae, Aleurodicinae, Udamosellinae) and one fossil subfamily (Bernaeinae). The subfamily Aleurodicinae comprises 118 worldwide distributed species in 18 genera, originating primary from Neotropical region. In Europe and the Mediterranean region the whiteflies’ fauna comprises 57 native and naturalized species in 25 genera. Five recorded species from genera Aleurodicus Douglas, 1892 and Paraleyrodes Quaintance, 1909 belong to subfamily Aleurodicinae. Three of them were recorded on Canarian island Gran Canaria. The last published check list of whiteflies in Croatia comprises 31 species. Five additional species were discovered recently. All currently recorded species belong to subfamily Aleyrodinae, none to Aleurodicinae. Economically the most important pest species are: Aleyrodes proletella Linnaeus, 1758, Dialeurodes citri Ashmead, 1885, Trialeurodes vaporariorum Westwood, 1856 and recently Bemisia tabaci Gennadius, 1889. Whiteflies from subfamily Aleurodicinae were collected on plants planted on public green spaces and in the city’s botanical garden of Las Palmas on the Canary Islands in November 2014. Specimens collected from infested leaves were identified to the species level on the basis of morphological characters of puparium/pupal case according to the relevant morphological keys. The following Aleurodicinae species were recorded: Aleurodicus dispersus Russell, 1965, Aleurodicus floccissimus (Martin, Hernández-Suárez & Carnero, 1997) and Paraleyrodes minei Iaccarino, 1990. They are all polyphagous pest species. Considering distribution in the Mediterranean basin, host plants and global climate change, introduction and possible domestication of some species from the subfamily Aleurodicinae can be expected in the future in coastal Croatia, especially the species P. minei.
