Sažetak

Luka Botić in his epic Bijedna Mara (Wretched Mara) proceeds from the standard exacerbated relations between Muslims and Christians, Turks and Croats, as two cultural circles, which meet and interact in the field of the boundary. His problematizing of the border-area does not go outside the domain of standard motifs of exotic exoticism and literary romance. However, these strategies are now being associated with a particular social context. The paper discusses the concepts of the boundary, romance and intercultural communication in the long poem Bijedna Mara (Wretched Mara),and the emphasis is on the issues of cross-cultural contacts and stereotypes. The author of the paper tries to answer the question whether Luka Botić uses trivial schemes in order to pander to popular taste or is it an attempt at the subversion of cultural stereotypes.
