Sažetak

Vitamin D is an essential nutrient necessary for the homeostasis of calcium and health of the skeletal system, with an increasing role in neurological diseases. All factors of vitamin D metabolism are present in the central nervous system, with autocrine and paracrine mechanisms of action. Vitamin D affects the levels of neurotrophic factors, regulates immune function and nervous system homeostasis. Vitamin D levels and supplementation is the subject of researches in most neurodegenerative diseases, with the lack associated with an increased disease risk. Researches in the field are promising, but there is a lack of high-quality studies needed for guidelines.
