Sažetak

Being in the world but not of the world has always represented a challenge
for the Church as it strives to study the world, to reflect on its realities on the basis of
Revelation, tradition and theology, and to search for ways of responding adequately to
these challenges. The Church in Bosnia and Herzegovina has often lived in turbulent
social circumstances and has reacted to these circumstances in various ways. This article
focuses on contemporary social challenges that require an appropriate pastoral
response from the Church. Before examining these challenges and responses, the author
establishes a theoretical framework for the analysis, presenting various models
of interpretation of social change and a typology of strategic pastoral responses by
the Church. Since the contemporary realities of Bosnia and Herzegovina still reflect
the influence of the Communist regime, the investigation begins with the challenges
that Communism posed to the Church, and the pastoral responses to these challenges,
before concluding with an analysis of the strategic responses of the Church. The same
procedure is developed in the post-Communist period, taking into the account specific
differences between the pre-war era, the period of the war and the post-war period.
