Sažetak

This paper is a survey of the early history of number π in the period when its existence was not yet proven. We give an overview of results related to area and circumference of circle in ancient civilisations, when the proportionality between circumference and diameter, and area and squared radius, was not yet proven, often not even clearly stated.
