Sažetak

The aim of this paper is informing students of a variety of teaching methods in teaching science, through combining and using various teaching methods and encouraging students to participate actively in the teaching process. The methods and teaching forms we used include field teaching, group work, brainstorming, experiments, text work, and insert method.
The research included 87 fifth graders attending a primary school in Slavonski Brod and was conducted over a two-week period, two lessons a week.
The control group were the students who were taught in a traditional, ex cathedra way. The three experimental groups either used experiments, worked on texts, or participated in field teaching.
The instruments used in the study were multiple choice questions and a questionnaire. Multiple choice questions were used in collecting data on the students' knowledge of a certain topic, and the questionnaire collected data on the students' familiarity with the applied methods and their need for individual work and field teaching.
The analysis of data obtained using multiple choice questions indicated a high level of students’ knowledge. The data obtained using a questionnaire pointed to an inadequate use and combination of diverse teaching methods. This paper emphasizes the importance
of combining various teaching methods both for the teaching process and for learning, as well as the need for using and combining various teaching forms. It also stresses the advantages of using group work, experiments and field teaching, all of which enhance learning and make students more motivated.
The teaching process which is research-based and makes use of a variety of teaching methods is the best for students and has lasting results.
