“ZA LUBAV ISUKARSTA” (“FOR THE LOVE OF JESUS CHRIST”) – THE (HI)STORY OF SAINT JULIAN IN THE “LIBRO OD MNOZIJEH RAZLOGA”

Sažetak
The “Libro od mnozijeh razloga” (Dubrovnik, 1520) contains a version of the legend or “history” of St Julian (Žulian). This translation from Italian is the only text about this saint identified in old Croatian literature to date. It differs both from the Latin version in Jacobus da Varagine’s “Legenda aurea,” and from longer French or Latin (verse) versions; a thorough textual-historical and literary-historical analysis of the Croatian texts has yet to be undertaken. Within the corpus of preserved hagiographic texts written in Croatia, this “history” is noteworthy for its theme and content, as well as for its compositional and rhetorical features – this paper deals with these issues. It is a dramatic, albeit short,
work that moves spasmodically through a few crucial (sometimes somewhat unexpected) peaks, the most unusual of which is undoubtedly that Julian commits patricide – albeit unintentionally and provoked by the devil’s deception. Julian, as a penitent saint who does however not perform a single miracle, finally finds peace in Christ’s loving forgiveness. At the end of the text his supplication is promised to all who repent and decide to do good. The exemplary nature of this hagiographic text is combined with a number of motifs and components that bear traits of different sources, genres, or traditions, such as folklore, classical literature, and romance. In this sense the (hi)story of St Julian as preserved in the “Libro od mnozijeh razloga” is a composite, and as such is unique in surviving medieval and early modern Croatian literature. It is a work written (translated) in a time and for a reading community when literary tastes and sensibilities were undergoing deep changes.
