Sažetak
In this article the design of typography in e-books is being researched through three variables: the designer, the e-book reader and the reader. E-book typography is different from printed books and web pages and represent a separate field with the newly arisen requirements. Display of typography in e-books depends on the rendering of e-book readers instead of the stylistic settings set by the book designers. Even though e-reader applications have greatly improved in stylistic settings support in the last few years, typographical support varies greatly and is disabling the designers to design e-books with respect to the typographical profession. Readers are generally able to change the display settings of e-books which results in the unexpected change of typography, creates visual dissonance and lessens the reading experience. One solution is to strive for total control of the author disabling the reader in changing of the typographical settings, which in most e-readers isn’t possible. The second solution is avoiding the design and letting the display be in control of the e-readers settings and readers’ preferences. There will be situations which require embedding of fonts where the designer will be forced to compromise between the two extremes. Embedding of the fonts also affect the size of the e-book so the fonts need to be converted to an adequate format to optimize its size.
