Sažetak

Swiss style relief shading is an efficient and visually eye-catching method of presenting the third dimension of relief on a two-dimensional map. This method is used for presenting the terrain in a natural, discerning and intuitive way. When using that kind of relief shading an important element is the use of a modified colour scale and the effect of aerial perspective. In the first part of this paper the graphic and technical developments as well as the basic principles of Swiss style relief shading were described. The second part of the paper was based on the production of the shaded relief automatically derived from the digital elevation model using free GIS software. Inspired by the work of Eduard Imhof in the field of cartographic relief representation, I created a digital map of Switzerland by applying the classic Swiss school techniques. The process of creating a map consists of overlapping of multiple layers (hillshade, multidirectional hillshade and aerial perspective) derived from the digital elevation model within the Quantum GIS software.
