Non-invasive diagnostic evaluation of voiding disorders in children

Voiding disorders are common in children, manifesting clinically as incontinence and/or obstruction of urine flow. Functional voiding disorders with dysfunction of the filling and/or emptying bladder phase are significant for its association with recurrent urinary tract infections, vesicoureteral reflux, renal scarring, bowel emptying difficulties, and possible development of emotional and behavioral disorders. Despite urodynamic testing being the gold standard in the voiding disorders assessment, in children, a non-invasive approach is preferred with simple diagnostic procedures that can start at the level of general practice already. The goal of these procedures is to determine the disorder type and screening for children with voiding dysfunction requiring further invasive examinations. Non-invasive diagnostics include structured medical history (using a questionnaire/scoring system) as well as focused clinical examination, voiding and stool diary, urine analysis, urinary tract ultrasound examination with post-void residual urine scan, and uroflowmetry. Timely detection and treatment of voiding disorders eliminate the potential risks of upper urinary system damage, contribute to the child getting stronger, self-esteem development, and reduce stress in the family.
