Sažetak

Introduction:
Using prohibited substances is one of the biggest problems of modern sport. The World Anti-Doping Organization is the main anti-doping institution in the world. Vision of the World Anti-Doping Organization is a world where athletes can compete in an environment without doping. Side effects that may occur after using prohibited substances include neurological, cardiovascular, respiratory, musculoskeletal, endocrine, dermatological, reproductive and other. Also, various mental disorders may occur, and in the worst case, death. For this reason, a timely education of athletes, doctors, physiotherapists and coaches is the most important link in the fight against doping.
Objective:
To identify the athlete's awareness of the harmful effects of doping in sport, and to determine whether there is a difference in the awareness between professional athletes and recreational athletes.
Materials and methods:
In the prospective study, 90 examinees aged 18 and above, who are actively doing sports are included. The examinees are divided into two groups: the first group is formed by professional athletes, and the second group is formed by recreational athletes. 39 examinees participated in the first group of professional athletes, and 51 in the second group of recreational athletes. The survey was conducted by structured questionnaire as a measuring instrument.
Results:
In the research of athletes' awareness of the harmful effects of doping in sports concluded that there is no statistically significant difference between the two groups, the cognition of professional athletes and recreational athletes, but there is a statistically significant positive relationship between the length of doing sports and the awareness of harmful effects of doping on athletes. Regarding the former doping use, it is shown that 27.78% of the observed athletes previously had experiences with doping.
Conclusion:
The professional athletes do not have greater awareness about harmful effects of doping in sport than the recreational athletes.
