Basic grades and properties of Okirol expandable polystyrene

Sažetak
Okirol is a trade name for expandable polystyrene produced by DIOKI d.d. Two basic grades of this PS-E are produced: (1) Okirol E, a general purpose grade; and (2) Okirol EF, a flame-retardant grade. Basically, these PS-E grades are blends of crystal polystyrene and blowing agents, in which blowing agents are uniquely dispersed in the remaining empty spaces between polymer chains. According to bead size distribution, Okirol E/EF grades are available in four basic bead sizes. In processing, various bulk densities can be achieved depending on the basic grade, bead size, temperature and pressure, and the length of time the beads remain in the pre-expander. Usability properties of particular Okirol E/EF grades and thus possible applications are determined based on their flammability properties and bulk densities. Owing to their low bulk density, products made from Okirol E/EF exhibit good mechanical, thermal and insulation properties that are all retained at different temperatures. Okirol E/EF products are resistant to water and to most chemicals, and non-resistant to organic solvents. Products are environmentally acceptable and do not pose a hazard to human health.
