Sažetak
The paper analyses the ways in which the literary sphere, understood as a space that includes
literary works, writers, literary events, and institutions, contributes to the development of city
identity. Based on the typology of urban symbols developed by Peter Nas and associates, in this
paper we identify different types of identity markers of the city, which are related to the literary
sphere, such as monuments dedicated to writers and literary characters, institutions such as
literary museums and libraries, depictions of cities in literary works, literary events, and other
related phenomena. Identification of “urban literary symbols” is an important step in sociological
examination of the ways in which elements of the literary sphere contribute to the city’s
recognizability, as well as in considerations of the possibility to use them as a cultural resource
for local development. Unlike the existing literature about the use of objects and phenomena
from the sphere of culture for city branding where the emphasis is mostly on film and music,
this work focuses on objects and phenomena from the sphere of literature, so therefore the
analysis considers the specifics of literary production in a global context.
