Evolution of Causality Among Francophone Children

Sažetak
Based on the individual restitution by fifteen six-year-old and eight-year-old children of a story read to them, the author demonstrates a clear evolution between six and eight years of age in the comprehension and expression of thirteen causal relationships (CR) found in the source text (ST). The thirteen CR of the ST can be identified by five markers: a semantic link (no explicit CR marker), a morphological marker (present tense versus future tense), a syntactic marker not specific to the marking of causality (by, who, at the idea of …), a lexical marker (the verb to become), an explicit syntactic marker (because). The CR employed by the children are systematically compared to the CR of the ST. The initial quantitative results show that, out of all the CR that could have been used, the six-year-old children understand one-fourth, whereas the eight-year-old children understand more than one-third. Out of all the CR present, the six-year-old children express in one way or another a little over one-third of the CR of the ST and the eight-year-old children a little over half. The eight-year-old children are more numerous than the six-year-old children in having modified the meaning of certain CR. They also express the CR of the ST with a different marker a lot more often than the six-year-old children. The expression of the majority of non-specific syntactic markers still poses numerous problems to the eight-year-old children.
