Sažetak

This work addresses the narrative features of Marulić’s text that are important for the determination of its genre. A possible initial hypothesis - that because of the obvious presence of material from the lives of the saints, male and female, the text should be said to belong to the genre of the hagiography - was disputed as early as 1987 in the analysis of D. Novaković, who considered that the ancient and medieval genre of the exemplum was a more suitable framework for the generic exploration of the Institutione. This double genre matrix - legend and exemplum - can be seen in the work as the process of the narrative transformation of the hagiographic model into the form of the exemplum. This process is the consequence of the specific thematic composition of Marulić’s text, in which legendary material is segmented narratively into individual episodes and scenes, more suitable to the form and function of the exemplum.
