Sažetak

ABSTRACT. Aim: Escherichia coli (E.coli) is responsible for up to 80% of community-acquired
urinary tract infections. As the onset of treatment of urinary tract infections is mostly
empirical, the antibiotic resistance of uropathogens has become an increasing problem. The
aim of the present study was to investigate the movement of antimicrobial susceptibility of
E.coli strains isolated during a five year period in Primorsko-Goranska County. Methods:
During the years 2003-2007 in the Laboratory for urogenital infections, Department of
Microbiology of the Teaching Institute of Public Health of Primorsko-Goranska County, the
number of E.coli isolates was 18.869. Susceptibility to amoxicillin, co-trimoxazole
(trimethoprim – sulfamethoxazole), amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, norfloxacin, cephalothin,
cefuroxime, ceftibuten and gentamicin was tested using the disk diffusion method. Results:
Analysed E.coli strains demonstrated the highest resistance rate to amoxicillin (37% – 41%),
followed by co-trimoxasole (19% – 30%). Resistance of E.coli isolated to all other antibiotics
was lower than 10,26%. Conclusions: During the period 2003-2007 the antimicrobial
susceptibility of E.coli isolates from Primorsko-Goranska County remained almost
unchanged.
