Sažetak

This article reconstructs the price and length of journey in ancient times by using the information system Orbis. The focus of the paper is on the connection of ancient harbor Hvar with other Adriatic harbors, with the review of the connection with prominent harbors in the Mediterranean as well as land connection with inland towns. Except for the years (385 - 384 BC) of Greek colonization of the
island of Hvar, nothing else is known about that important event. The questions on the number of colonizers, kinds of ships and cargo, etc. will further remain unanswered due to the lack of archaeological evidence. Nevertheless, we are trying to figure out some “technical” answers by ourselves. Even centuries after the Illyrians, Greeks and Romans, the mobility of people and goods is still crucial for Hvar’s prosperity. Traditional maps and documented records summarized into a simple geoinformatics model can, to a certain extent, help us make conclusions about the ancient position of the island of Hvar in the context of economy, traffic limitations and interaction with the rest of the world. It is very difficult to reconstruct the events from ancient times so information systems like ORBIS don’t give us the final evidence nor they can be a replacement for archaeology, but they do help to understand history better.
