Sažetak
Knowledge of biomass in shrubs of oriental hornbeam (Carpinus orientalis Mill.) is especially
important because of good and rational management of forests and forest grounds
on karst and because of economic and utility functions which these forest ecosystems have
had which take greatest areas in the Submediterranean karst areas Republic of Croatia.
This paper presents the results of wood and leaves biomass in the shrubs of oriental
hornbeam, and the research was done on longlasting experimental plots in forestries
Imotski and Vrgorac. The weight and volume of wood and leaves was measured, the height
of shrub, diameter of tree crown and the number of shootings from the trunk. The volume
of wood varies from 11,91 to 28,58 m3/ha, and the volume of leaves from 3,86 to 5,33
m3/ha. The volume depends on the degradation stadium of shrub, that is the dimensions of
its constituent units, their number within the unit of area, the way of grouping on the area,
canopy of the site. The results of research showed that the leaf and wood mass in the shrubs
of oriental hornbeam is in strong linear dependence of the diameter of the crowns and number
of shootings from the trunk and it can be expressed by equation of the line. The linear
correlation coefficient between the volume of wood and the diameter of the crown amounts
to 0,774, and the volume of leaf and diameter of crowns 0,803. Biomass above the soil area
of shrubs of oriental hornbeam can best be estimated on the basis of crown diameter.
